How to calculate the fuel cost of a trip
Fuel cost = distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon. A 420-mile trip in a car that does 28 MPG needs 15 gallons; at $3.15 a gallon that's $47.25. In metric: distance × l/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre.
Use your car's real average rather than the official figure – highway driving at speed, a full car and a roof box can easily add 10–20%. If you log your fill-ups in Carage, you'll always know your real number.

How do I split gas money between passengers?
Enter the number of people sharing and the calculator divides the cost. Tick round trip if you're coming back the same way.
What MPG should I use?
Your car's real average from recent fill-ups is the most accurate. The window sticker or EPA rating is usually optimistic for fast highway driving.
Does it include tolls and parking?
